Jindal Admits Katrina Story Was False

February 27th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Louisiana (Where I'm From)

Looks like the game is up.

Remember that story Bobby Jindal told in his big speech Tuesday night — about how during Katrina, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a local sheriff who was battling government red tape to try to rescue stranded victims?

Turns out it wasn’t actually, you know, true.

Facebook CEO Zuckerberg: We Do Not Own User Data

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg hosted a conference call this morning with media where he discussed the company’s Terms of Service, which came under fire earlier this month after the social network made wildly unpopular changes that granted them the ability to store and use your content indefinitely, even after you deleted your account.

While Facebook quickly reverted to its old ToS and launched the Facebook Bill of Rights and Responsibilities group, the controversy put the company’s policies in the spotlight, with some users going so far as to delete their accounts in protest. Today, Facebook has released what they’re calling “Draft Principles and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities For User Review, Comment and Vote,” the full text of which can be found in Facebook’s press room.

Botshabelo, founded by Marion and Con Cloete in 1990, is dedicated to improving the lives of the economically challenged, especially children who have been orphaned by or exposed to HIV/AIDS. Using the traditional African village (and its inherent ubuntu values of cooperation and joint responsibility) as a model, the community works together to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope, safety, education and sustainable growth to all residents.

My friend, Alexis, is currently finishing up her Masters in Social Work at Botshabelo. She is spending 3 months of her life working with the children, learning about the culture (and herself) and experiencing this wonderful country. Please read more about the organization and consider donating.

NEW YORK — MSNBC’s Chris Matthews quietly uttered “Oh God” as Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal prepared to give the Republican Party response to President Barack Obama’s speech to Congress.

TVNewser reports that Matthews has offered this explanation:

I was taken aback by that peculiar stagecraft, the walking from somewhere in the back of this narrow hall, this winding staircase looming there, the odd anti-bellum look of the scene. Was this some mimicking of a president walking along the state floor to the East Room?

“Literally meaning “Fat Tuesday,” Mardi Gras is the culmination of a weeks-long Carnival season that ends on Ash Wednesday. While impromptu foot and horseback parades had been a regular New Orleans occurrence for decades, it was in 1857 that the first “krewe” — private groups with semi-mythological namesakes that organize thematic parades — was established. This 1879 picture details a parade by Rex, an all-male krewe whose leader is known as the “King of Carnival.” The Krewe of Rex established the official Mardi Gras colors of green, gold, and purple….”

“What seems to happen is that a piece of familiar music serves as a soundtrack for a mental movie that starts playing in our head.” said Petr Janata, a cognitive neuroscientist at University of California, Davis. “It calls back memories of a particular person or place, and you might all of a sudden see that person’s face in your mind’s eye.”

Incredible Picture of Inauguration

February 24th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

From an email I received today…

“Amazing Hi-Definition photograph…2009 Inauguration Photo – SUPER HI-DEF…This is absolutely the BEST in ‘high definition’….. Really amazing….Zoom in (‘double-click’ an area) ….and watch it focus…Then zoom some more… and wait for focus…This picture was taken with a robotic camera and weighs in at 1,474 megapixel. (295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera) It was a Canon that pulled together over 200 individual shots. Each zoom in takes a second to focus …and then you can see some amazing reactions. Bonus points if you find Yo-Yo Ma …. taking a picture with his iPhone.”

Amazing picture.
